On March 16, 2024, at 1 pm, a Celebration of Life Memorial Service will take place at Covenant Faith Church of God, located at 10505 S. Halsted St., Chicago, IL 60628.

James “Jimmy” Reed Jr. was a cherished figure in the world of blues music, a dedicated community servant, a loving husband, and a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Born on April 1, 1948, to Mary Lee Reed and the renowned blues musician Mathis James Reed, famously known as “Jimmy Reed,” James Reed Jr. passed away on Monday, February 26th, 2024, at 11:20 pm, at South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, IL.

James Reed Jr. was the second of eight children born to the iconic Jimmy Reed, and from a young age, he became known for his musical talents. Starting at the age of 13, he accompanied his father on tours and in the recording studio, playing rhythm guitar in the band.

In addition to his contributions to the blues music industry, James Reed Jr. served in the United States Marine Corps reserves and fought valiantly in the Vietnam War. His commitment to service extended further as he spent an additional six months with the Marines to perform with the first Marine Air Band.

Alongside his mother, Mary Lee Reed, and siblings, he co-founded Seeds of Reed, Ltd., a corporation dedicated to managing the affairs of Jimmy Reed’s blues music and preserving his father’s musical legacy.

Not only known for his musical prowess, James Reed Jr. was an active and devoted member of the Covenant Faith Church of God in Chicago. Serving as the bass guitarist, co-coordinator, and overseer of the Manna Food Pantry, he touched the lives of hundreds of families in need each week. Additionally, he served as a Deacon of the church, embodying a life dedicated to faith and community service.

James Reed Jr. leaves behind a rich legacy, survived by his loving widow, Laverne Reed, many siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. He was the proud father of four children: Quincy Reed (deceased), Trelena Anderson, Cherita Reed, and Phillip Reed (deceased). He was also a loving grandfather to Nia & Caleb Anderson Quinae Wade and great-grandfather to Taegan Wade.

James Reed Jr.’s life was a personal journey and a shared legacy of blues, service, and love. He will forever be remembered as the son of the famous blues musician Jimmy Reed, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
